The Adam and Eve Story

Read the story of Adam and Eve in Genesis chapter 2-3

A PARAPHRASED ADAM AND EVE STORY:
dam's responsibility was to tend to the garden. The plants and the trees provided all of the foodthat Adam needed.

Then God created birds and animals from the dustof the ground, and allowed Adam to name each one of them.

Though the animals and birds were beautiful,Adam was still lonely.

God knew that Adam was alone, and said, "This is not good.I will make a help meet for him (Adam).

God put Adam to sleep and removed a rib from his side. From Adam's rib and the dust of the earth, God created Eve.

Adam and Eve loved each other and lived a very happy life together in the garden.

They tended to the garden that God had created for them. And He dwelled in the garden with them.

There were two trees in the Garden. The Tree of Life, and the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil.

God warned Adam and Eve to stay away from the latter. He warned them, that to eat of that tree would bring death.

One day, when Eve was alone, she happened upon a serpent in the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil.
God created the first man, Adam, and planteda beautiful garden to be his home.

The Serpent asked her what God had told her about the tree.

Eve told the serpent that God had warned them that they would die, if they ate from the tree.

The serpent told Eve that God was lying to them.He further told Eve, that if she and Adam ate of the tree, they would become like God.

Foolishly, Eve believed the serpent and ate from the tree. She also gave some to Adam, and he too ate from it.

After eating from the tree, they suddenly were aware that they were naked. Adam and Eve tried to hide from God.

As God walked in the garden, he called for them. When they came out of hiding he asked them, "Did you eat from the tree that I told you not to eat from."

Adam answered, "The woman you gave me, offered me the fruitand I ate."

God asked Eve what she had done. Eve blamed the serpent.

God then cursed the serpent to crawl on his belly forever. And told the serpent that man would be his enemy forever more.

"He will bruise your head, and you will bruise his heal."

God also told Eve that she would bear children in pain.

He then told Adam, because he listened to Eve, that he must now work hard for every harvest that he needed from the earth.

God sent Adam and Eve out of the Garden. Adam was now destined to hard labor for the rest of his life.

THE END or The Beginning....

Adam, Eve, and the Serpent
By Elaine Pagels / Random House, Inc

How did the early Christians come to believe that sex was inherently sinful? When did the Fall of Adam become synonymous with the fall of all humanity? What turned Christianity from a dissident sect that championed the integrity of the individual and the idea of free will into the bulwark of a new imperial order--with the central belief that human beings cannot choose not to sin? In this provocative materpiece of historical scholarship Elaine Pagels re-creates the controversies that racked the early church as it confronted the riddles of sexuality, freedom, and sin as embodied in the story of Genesis. 189 pages, softcover from Vintage Books.
