Christian Covenant Scripture Readings

As a believer, one of the most important thing you can do is learn about the covenant promises of God. He is faithful to His promises.

The word tells us that God is not a man that he should lie. And I believe that. If He promised us something, he is faithful to bring it to fruition.

Genesis 15:18--"On the same day the Lord made a covenant with Abram, saying: To your descendants I have given this land, from the River Euphrates..."

Exodus 31:16-- "Therefore the children of Israel shall keep the Sabbath to observe the Sabbath throughout their generations as a perpetual covenant."

Malachi 3:1--"Behold, I send My messenger,And he will prepare the way before Me. And the Lord, whom you seek, Will suddenly come to Histemple, Even the Messenger of the covenant, In whom you delight.Behold, He is coming," Says the Lord of hosts."

2 Corinthians 1:20--"For all the promises of God in Him are Yes, and in Him Amen, to the glory of God through us."

Hebrews 6:12-14--"That you do not become sluggish, but imitate those who through faith and patience inherit the promises. v13. For when God mad a promise to Abraham, because he could swear by no one greater, He sore by himself, v14. saying 'Surely blessing I will bless you, and multiplying i will multiply you."

Sealed with an Oath: Covenant in God's Unfolding Purpose
By Paul R. Williamson

Paul R. Williamson looks at the role of the covenant concept in Scripture and the meaning of this terminology. He then sets the idea of covenant in the context of God's universal purpose, and traces the idea through Noah and the patriarchs, the nation of Israel and the kingship of David. Lastly, he shows how the new covenant is anticipated in the Old Testament and fulfilled in the New.

Williamson offers new insights into key texts and issues related to the theme of covenant. He is not afraid to challenge established positions. One example is his dual-covenant approach to God's dealings with Abraham.

His robust scholarship will be appreciated by scholars, lecturers and students in theology, ministers and all who have a serious interest in the covenant concept.

Paul R. Williamson is Lecturer in Old Testament and Hebrew at Moore Theological College, Sydney, Australia. He is the author of Abraham, Israel and the Nations and a contributor to The Land of Promise, the New Dictionary of Biblical Theology and the Dictionary of the Old Testament.
