Obey God

The Blessings & Benefits of Obeying God

Obey God

“Children
obey your parent in the Lord; for this is right.” Ephesians 6:1

Growing up in a Christian home, I heard this scripture many times. Still today, I remind my own teen of the importance of obedience. Not just at home, but in school, and in his spiritual life.

Whether or not my words are actually sinking in, I’m not sure. But I do know that one day they will be a part of his lectures, just like they were a part of my parents and mine.

God expects the same obedience from us that we expect from our children: the same obedience that our parents expected from us.

Thinking of obedience as a form of deprivation or punishment, is a mistake. It’s more like an opportunity. When we obey God by submitting to His will, we open the door for God to bless us. “If ye be willing and obedient, ye shall eat the good of the land.” Isaiah 1:19

My son knows the rules of the house. I’ve tried to explain to my teen that breaking the house rules ties my hands. I can’t be a blessing to him the way that I’d like to.

If he failed all of his classes or got suspended from school, I wouldn’t go out and purchase him the car of his dreams, would I? However, when he’s been willingly obedient. Within reason, there is nothing I will refuse him, if he asked.

Our Father in heaven feels the same way about us. “Whatsoever we ask, we receive of Him, because we keep His commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in His sight.” 1 John 3:22

God provides guidelines and commandments to keep us in His will. These directions offer both guidance in the times of confusion and accountability in the times of temptation.

Living within God’s will allows the blessings to flow in our lives. However, when we operate outside of His will, we open the door for the curse. “If ye be willing and obedient, ye shall eat the god of the land: but if ye refuse and rebel, ye shall be devoured with the sword: for the mouth of the Lord hath spoken it.” Isaiah 1:19, 20

Benefits of Obedience

  • Protection: ”But if thou shalt indeed obey his voice, and do all that I speak; then I will be an enemy unto thine enemies, and an adversary unto thine adversaries. For mine Angel shall go before thee,” Exodus 23: 22,23

  • Blessings and Prosperity: “If ye be willing and obedient, ye shall eat the good of the land:” Isaiah 1:19

  • Demonstration of our love for God: “And hereby we do know that we know Him, if we kep His commandments.” 1 John 2:3

  • We receive what we ask God for: “And whatsoever we ask, we receive of Him, because we keep His commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in His sight.” 1 John 3:22
