Overcoming Self Doubt

The key is knowing who you are!

Overcoming Self Doubt

Ever wondered what you’re truly capable of accomplishing? How succussful you could be if you really pushed yourself? What great accomplishment you could be known for? How powerful and influential you could be?

I know I have! I've day dreamed about it many times.

Some people seem to know from diapers, what they want to accomplish in life. And I've always envied them for that. They are courageous. They're focused. They know what they want to do. And they go for it. Overcoming every obstacle. And they succeed in great proportions.

I was never like that. I spent more time doubting than overcoming. Thinking I could never be that outgoing. Believing that only extroverted people could be go-getters. And only people born into wealth could be prosperous.

Only recently, as an adult have I begun to understand the seed of greatness that is within me. And only in God’s word have I found the courage to pursue and achieve greater than I thought possible.

I have not fulfilled all of my dreams-YET. But I am blessed. And all of my needs are met. I’m enjoying life and doing something I’ve always dreamed of doing. I’m writing. And some day I’ll have that #1 best seller that will bless the lives of millions! For a person who was trapped by fear and insecurity, my self-confidence has come a long way!

Take for example, this article you are reading. For you, these may be simple words on paper--right? Wrong--for me just writing this is a leap of faith and courage. “Who cares what I have to say?” Nobody’s gong to read it anyway! How do I even know I’m even saying the ‘right’ things?”

Those are the thoughts that raced through my mind each time I even considered writing. What made me feel that way? What makes any of us feel this way? We don’t fully recognize who we are in Christ. ..."because greater is He that is in you, than he that is in the world.” 1John 4:4

God Wants Us to Achieve Great Things

There is so much more inside of us than we can imagine. God has planted a seed of success in us, but we have to water it so that it will grow. Fear and self-doubt will kill the seed. “Being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ;” Philippians 1:6

One of the major problems with self-doubt is that it takes your focus off of God. When we doubt ourselves, we are in a sense doubting God’s ability to work through us. It’s not about what we can do on our own. It’s all about what we can do through Christ. “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Philippians 4:13

There’s so much potential in each of us. God wants to work through us to accomplish great things. He’s not requiring us to be “great” in and of ourselves. But to realize that it is He who makes us great.“Not by might, nor by power, but by My Spirit saith the Lord of hosts.” Zechariah 4:6

What are we capable of?

Great things! That’s what we are capable of doing. “Verily, verily I say unto you, He that believeth on Me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.” John 14:12

Jesus led sinners to Christ, so can we. Jesus healed the sick, so can we. Jesus touched the lives of thousands, and so will we! He accomplished what He came to do. He overcame every obstacle. And He did it!

So can we. We can do all things through Christ who strengthens us! Whatever the dream, we can do it in Christ. We can't let the seed die. We have to nurture it and trust God to bring a harvest of success.

We don’t need the support or encouragement of others. In my experience, eight out of ten people you share your dream with won’t be supportive any way. Thank God our ability to succeed comes from Him, not man. So the opinions of others can’t hold us back. Only our own self-doubt can.

It’s not about what other people think. It’s not about your past. It’s not about the bad grades you made in school, or how unsuccessful you’ve been in the past. In the past, you were doing it on your own. Now you’re doing it with God! And that's makes all the difference.

Principles for Overcoming Self Doubt

  • Remind yourself that God is working through you. You are not alone. The Christ that lives in you is enabling you to do all things with great success. It's not up to you, it's up to God. So take the pressure off yourself and put it on God's word.

  • You don't have to be perfect to be successful or accomplish great things. As long as you put God first, all of the rest will fall into place. No man is perfect but Christ. Moses wasn't perfect. Noah wasn't perfect. David wasn't perfect. Rahab wasn't perfect. Need I go on?

  • Bind Self doubt by confessing the word of God. When doubt creeps in, and it will, say, "greater is He that is in me." or "I can do all things through Christ". or "Not by my strength or might, but by God's power."

  • Trust God and know that He has begun a good work in you and He is faithful to complete it. Step out on faith. And "...lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares you, and run with endurance the race that is set before you. Hebrews 12:1"

Be blessed!
